SAN DIEGO, CA The Irish Congress of Southern California is proud to announce that its 34th Annual San Diego St. Patrick’s Day Parade (the largest Parade west of the Mississippi) will step off on Saturday, March 15th, 2014 promptly at 10:30 a.m. on Fifth Avenue at Laurel Street as thousands of marchers and spectators gather to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day.
The Parade travels up Fifth Avenue from Laurel to Upas Street and then returns down Sixth Avenue to Laurel. An event filled Irish Festival follows in Balboa Park with live entertainment.
Our special feature this year will be the CAL FIRE’s Honor Guard, Pipes and Drums which will be leading the FDNY Ladder 152 fire truck that fought the fight at the World Trade Center on 9/11 in New York. The 911 truck will be on display at the parade site. CAL FIRE’s Honor Guard, Pipes and Drums started back in 1996. The group was formed to help honor their department members who had fallen in the line of duty. Today the Honor Guard continues to honor our members both current and retired.
There will be over 120 Parade entries. Come and see Bagpipers and High School Marching Bands, Police and Fire Department Units, Floats, Dancing Groups, Marching and Equestrian Units, Clowns, Dignitaries and Honorees, Representatives from Ireland, Antique Cars and more. Brian McLellan is the 2014 Parade Chairman and the Theme of this year’s Parade is “Celebrating People in Public Service”.
Our Irish Festival in Balboa Park (Sixth Avenue and Maple Street area) runs from 9 am to 6 pm and features outstanding entertainment on 2 Stages. In the morning we have Irish Step Dancers and then have a full afternoon line-up with Irish Folk singers and Bands.
All day there are Craft Booths, Food Booths, an authentic Celtic Village, Beer Gardens, and a Kids Zone with rides. Over 30,000 people are expected to attend. Trolleys run from a free parking lot near the Prado in Balboa Park and several other locations to the Festival.
Other events include a Catholic Mass held in the Imperial House, 505 Kalmia Street, at 8 a.m. and a Military Flag presentation ceremony at Sixth Avenue and Laurel at 9:45 a.m. Our main Parade sponsor is Guinness.
