In this second segment from Gaby Soule on how to play Layla by Eric Clapton, Gaby teaches the main melody riff that is based in the D minor pentatonic scale. Soule demonstrates the riff as follows; 10th fret of the 2nd string with first finger and then a hammer-on to the 14th fret with 4th finger and then to the 10th fret of the first string with first finger and then a hammer-on to the 14th fret with 4th finger and then a pull-off back to the 10th fret and then back to the 14th fret of the 2nd string and finally ending on the 10th fret of the first string. The Pentatonic Scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave. They can be found all over the world and are the main scale used in the Blues genre.
Eric Clapton is an English guitarist, singer and song writer born in Ripley, Surrey England in 1945. He is considered to be one of the most influential guitarists of all time and was ranked number 2 on Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest guitarists. He is the only person to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three separate times and has won 17 Grammy awards.
Gaby Soule is a guitarist, composer and singer originally from Argentina but has lived and worked in Spain as a musician and guitar instructor for many years. He has released several albums with his own projects and with other artists. He’s been a member of many bands in Argentina and Spain. Gaby has worked with other groups touring Europe and South America, and played with bassist Rudy Sarzo (Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, and Dio), Walter Giardino (Rata Blanca), La Renga and other artists like Andres Calamaro. He combines his activity as a guitar instructor in Madrid, Spain, as well as being an online guitar teacher. Gaby is currently writing new material for his upcoming project.
