Oil wells can cost more than 30 million dollars. Your average summer blockbuster movie costs way more than 30 million dollars. 30 millions is too little. The next step in space must be civilian, because, ultimately‚ space is our new home. My only annoyance with this is the prize money. It’s *only* $30 million. Granted, that is a lot of money, but it’s not even close to what we really need to bring into this. Let’s invest $30 *billion* into this, divided up into goals. Let’s really put human kind on the moon. Let’s do it for real this time. We have already been there. We have already landed there. I’m not excited about doing again just at smaller scale.   10. You can now watch the full-length “Back to the Moon” planetarium show I wrote—online and in HD! It holds up pretty well, although it ain’t the same as seeing the show in the dome. 

  11. There is only one way to make the moon a permanent destination we can travel to or live. That is With fuel harvested from the moon. We also need a space tug to move people and equipment from low earth orbit to the moon and back. This tug would be the power to escape the earths gravity well and to decelerate into the moons orbit. No more of this sling shot to the moon. You can get to the moon if you have enough fuel in one or 2 orbits. With a space tug meeting a crew or cargo ship in low earth orbit and i mean low like 200km you can carry more equipment and supplies to the moon. You also limit the time people have to be exposed to zero-G and cosmic radiation. Some pay loads like the inflatable habitats will have to be launched with larger rockets but many of them could be launched with rocket planes like the British are developing. The fuel for the tug could be solid ice. Melted and split into hydrogen and oxygen just before it is needed to burn out of orbit. using a on board reactor. This way you would not need liquid tanks that could leak and loose fuel. The Tug’s could also salvage dead satellites for parts and de-orbit large objects before they break up the become a navigational hazard.
