New Berlin, WI (PRWEB) April 5, 2011
Last Friday, BuyCostumes added themselves to a growing number of mainstream websites joining the tomfoolery that April 1st, or April Fool’s Day has come to be for many. The website, the world’s largest online retailer of Halloween costumes, unveiled the first three costumes in a supposedly new proprietary line dubbed “RealPowerTek.” The website featured exclusive icons advertising the new costumes, along with an accompanying press release (viewable here). The press release explained how the costume line bestowed “real life superhero powers” to the wearer, as developed by a team of student engineers working towards their PH.Ds.
“We’re pleased with the success of this project, particularly considering it was our first attempt at playing an April Fool’s joke on our site,” explained Dan Haight, President and CEO of BuySeasons, the parent company of BuyCostumes. The site joined a growing group of websites that participate in April Fools, which this year included mainstays such as Google, and ThinkGeek along with more surprising forays into the hilarity from the US Army and others.
The prank drove significant traffic to BuyCostumes.com, surpassing the expectations of the company. The site saw roughly a 5% increase in traffic through the course of the day attributable to the joke. While the products themselves were not available for sale or presale, customers were presented with the ability to sign up for an email notification for when the product came in stock, which several hundred individual did. Haight added “We wanted to do something really cool for anybody who actually signed up for the emails regarding these products, so those individuals will be getting a 50% off coupon via email later this week.”
The three costumes that opened the line were based off of existing BuyCostumes products, and included “Hovering Magneto, “Wall Crawling Spider-man,” and “Electrical Storm.” Magneto, a villain from the X-Men comics, possess the power to hover by controlling the magnetic field surrounding him, for their “Hovering Magneto” costume, BuyCostumes described electromagnets that repelled from the natural magnetism in the earth. The “Wall Crawling Spider-Man” costume claimed to give the wearer the ability to scale walls due to a combination of carbon nanotubes and industrial strength adhesive. “Electrical Storm” was also based on an X-Men character who can manipulate the weather; the costume was made from electrically conducive fabric that allowed the wearer to produce visible electrical streams.
