Renewal Design-Build Receives Three Decatur Design Awards

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 12, 2013

Renewal Design-Build of Decatur, GA received three honors at the 2013 Decatur Design Awards ceremony on May 22, 2013 at Decatur City Hall. The City of Decaturs Historic Preservation Commission reviews design entries and presents awards for projects that preserve, enhance or contribute to the built commercial and residential environment within the city. Renewal received awards for: Historic Preservation; an Addition, and the Leila Ross Wilburn Award for individuals or organizations that promote preservation and/or excellence in design.

We are truly humbled to receive three additional Decatur Design Awards this year, said Peter Michelson, CEO of Renewal. It is such an honor to be recognized by the City to whom we owe so much of our success. Our goal is to continually contribute to the beauty and character of Decatur. We are grateful for the positive recognition for our design solutions, and we are thankful to our wonderful clients who make winning these awards possible.

Renewal won the 2013 Historic Preservation Award for a unique whole house renovation. Located in the Old Decatur Historic District, just a couple miles from Atlanta, this 1920s craftsman bungalow was in extreme disrepair when it was purchased and required a major renovation to restore the exterior to historic standards. The homeowners selected Renewal to completely renovate the home inside and out. The entire interior was gutted to create an open floor plan with a rustic farmhouse style that includes modern conveniences and industrial details. Significant improvements were made to the exterior siding, porches, windows, doors, foundation, trim and roof, all under the approval of the Decatur Historic Commission to ensure that the renovations and addition were consistent with the character of the neighborhood. The mix of old and new elements blend seamlessly in the finished product. View this historic renovation.

Renewal was also recognized with a 2013 Addition Award. With three children and one on the way, the homeowners were quickly outgrowing their three bedroom home. The value of this highly functional addition is not just in the three extra bedrooms, modern kitchen, and spacious mudroom, but in its added character and absolute seamlessness of the project. Renewal was able to successfully preserve the period of their 1940s home and the Decatur neighborhood. The keeping room features a wood burning fireplace, custom built-ins, and French doors leading out to the backyard. The exterior is a showpiece all on its own. From the charming color choices to the trim detailing, the addition enhances the home in every way. View the project.

Renewal also received the coveted 2013 Leila Ross Wilburn Award for helping promote preservation in Decatur. Renewals Peter Michelson, CEO, and Kara Adams, Marketing Manager, are active members of the Decatur Old House Fair committee.

In addition to winning three Decatur Design Awards in 2013, Renewal has also been recognized by the Decatur Preservation Commission for award-winning work since 2009. Renewal previously won awards in the following categories:

Oblivians

“There’s a case to be made that the Oblivians are the greatest Memphis music act of the post- Al Green/Big Star era…With a deeper musicality and more charisma than most, but with no loss of energy or attitude for it, they are legends in their scene for good reason.”—Memphis Flyer

Desperation, the long-awaited new album from acclaimed garage punk trio the Oblivians, will be released June 4 on In The Red Records. This is the first record from the band in over fifteen years and follows 1997’s …Play 9 Songs with Mr. Quintron. In celebration of the new album, the trio will embark on a series of special dates later this spring/summer. More details to be announced shortly.
Desperation was produced by band-member Greg Cartwright (with special help from Doug Easley) and engineered by Collin Dupuis at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, TN. In addition to the three members, the 14-track album features special guests Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat on organ, percussion and vocals on the track “Call The Police.” Of recording together again, Cartwright comments, “over the years as we would occasionally reunite for a festival or special occasion, the idea began to grow in the back of my mind. The idea of making a new record. Because as much as we enjoyed playing together, the thing I missed the most was creating together. So that’s what we did. I had just made a Reigning Sound record with Dan at his Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, TN. And it really knocked me out. Dan had a 1-inch Scully 8 track. I remember asking him how it sounded when he sent the equipment list. Dan’s answer. ‘It’s the greatest @#$ %^&* tape machine in the world.’ He wasn’t kidding. Literally the perfect device for catching a live band. And that’s the way the Oblivians had always made records. Most of our previous recordings had been done live on home recordings or at Doug Easley’s Easley-McCain Studios back in the day. Sadly, about seven years ago that studio burned down. So finding Dan’s studio was a big piece of the puzzle.”
Formed in Memphis in 1993, the Oblivians are Greg Oblivian (aka Greg Cartwright), Eric Oblivian (aka Eric Friedl) and Jack Oblivian (aka Jack Yarber). The trio released their debut LP Soul Food in 1995, followed by 1996’s Popular Favorites and 1997’s …Play 9 Songs with Mr. Quintron. In both their live shows and recordings, the three members alternate between instruments, each playing guitar, drums and singing lead vocals.

With Virtual Pet Game Furdiburb for Android OS Complete, Sheado.net Focuses on New Projects

Orange, CA (PRWEB) May 29, 2013

Chad Ata, lead developer for Sheado.net, is currently working on porting Furdiburb, the virtual pet, to iOS. “We started developing Furdiburb when Android was just getting started,” commented Chad. “This forced us to use the Java programming language, which does not easily port over to the iOS environment. After having done a bit of research on the subject, we’ve decided to use the PlayN project in combination with the Xamarin / MonoTouch environment in order to port Furdiburb without having to rewrite most of its code. Hopefully this will mean only weeks instead of months before we can have Furdi on iPhones, iPods, and iPads!”

Meanwhile, Danny Ata, artist, and Alice Lo, co-developer and composer, are working on Sheado.net’s second game, code named “Evo”. “Things are already starting to come together for our next game,” remarked Danny. “I’ve been using a new animation program called Spine, which is going to allow me to animate a ton of things, and I have a good feeling that people who enjoyed Furdiburb are going to love the gameplay in this one. There may even be cameos by Crabidab or Tokori, but it’s too soon to tell. I’m definitely looking forward to where our creative process takes us.”

Sheado.net also re-designed their Furdiburb store page with a cleaner and less confusing layout. New Furdiburb apparel, posters, and other paraphernalia are available.

About Furdiburb, the virtual pet game

After vacationing on Earth, Furdiburb’s parents accidentally leave their baby alien behind. Players take care of their virtual pet by feeding, bathing, and curing sicknesses. The game contains many adventure puzzles as well as action mini-games that allow players to collect spaceship parts so that they may fix up a broken spaceship to return Furdiburb home to his parents.

Katie Johnson’s book “Red Flags for Primary Teachers” is Published

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) May 21, 2013

Need a book that will solve many childrens reading problems?

Katie Johnson’s new book, Red Flags for Primary Teachers: 27 Neurodevelopmental and Vision Issues that Affect Learning With Activities to Help, just published by Tendril Press, can help teachers of the primary grades with their struggling readers. Chip Wood, well-known advocate for child-centered education and author of the very useful Yardsticks book, wrote that Red Flags ” … is designed to provide dozens of specific activities and strategies from the field of vision and neuro-motor patterning that can make significant differences in the reading and writing careers of elementary school students. Katie does this in a no-frills, straightforward style….”

Katie Johnson, author of Doing Words (originally published by Houghton Mifflin Co. in 1987), has written an easy-to-use handbook for teachers with descriptions of reading problems and suggestions for resolving them.

Come into Katie Johnsons world, the world of six- and seven-year-olds and how they think and move.

After forty years of teaching children how to read and write in first grades all over the country, she has seen many puzzles. If you are a teacher of young children, or a parent of a beginning reader, you may have been puzzled by such children too. “Reading this small gem of a book is like listening to a teacher down the hall share a great idea,” says John Hickey, special ed teacher in Dedham, Massachusetts.

Why cant some of them read? Why do children

Paperplane Releases “Extraordinary Jenny Jones” on the AppStore and iBookstore

Singapore (PRWEB) May 16, 2013

Independent mobile app developer Paperplane releases its latest app and ebook collection on May 16th entitled Extraordinary Jenny Jones.

Aimed at kids aged 6 and up, the Extraordinary Jenny Jones Collection demonstrates the value and importance of children being themselves. Jenny Jones has a unique perspective of life because what the rest of the world sees as round, Jenny sees as square. And the other way round. Shes the original round peg in a square hole, with a way of looking at the world that is original, valid and valuable – like every child’s.

The Extraordinary Jenny Jones Collection comprises a 70-page illustrated Read Aloud eBook and an interactive iPad app, which is the perfect marriage of a storybook and game designed to provide learning entertainment for children 6 and above.

Extraordinary Jenny Jones teaches children to believe in themselves and understand that their way of looking at the world is just as good as anyone else’s, says the author John Sheterline. “In fact, a childs perspective is usually more interesting, valid and original than most adults.”

The Extraordinary Jenny Jones app features:

More than 20 hand-illustrated interactive story spreads
Challenging hidden object puzzles to increase childrens powers of observation, memory and dexterity;
Delightful mini-games to enhance Jennys story

The Extraordinary Jenny Jones ebook includes:

50 fully illustrated pages and 20 additional pages of bonus content
Discussion and activity guide developed specially for the ebook by an English teacher
Exclusive interview with the author

The entire Collection is free during Jennys birthday month of May. From June, the Extraordinary Jenny Jones app will be available on the iTunes store for USD$ 3.99 and her ebook will be available on iBookstore for USD$ 5.99.

Jennys story leads children to an important cognitive developmental stage: the discovery of perspective. Children also learn an important moral message, that people will accept them for their alternative viewpoint and that they, in turn, should accept others who are different, said Dr. Neil Reddy, Paperplane’s education consultant.

Extraordinary Jenny Jones is the third original interactive story from Paperplane and will be available from May 16th 2013.
