Last year, Marina Del Rey Hospital began a robotic surgery program, and in that short time it has become one of Los Angeles’s pioneers of this high-tech medical frontier. On June 6, the hospital is inviting the public and the medical community to come discover why its staff is so proud of the program.
“Weve established ourselves as a reliable, leading center for high-tech surgery,” said Dr. Daniel Marcus, a general surgeon at the hospital. We’re really eager to show everyone just what we can do.”
In the twelve months since it acquired the cutting-edge da Vinci Si robotic surgery system, Marina Del Rey Hospital has built a dedicated robotic surgery team whose members perform procedures in several specialties, including general surgery, urology, gynecology, and thoracic surgery. With over twenty robotically trained surgeons on staff, the hospital is able to offer the highest level of minimally invasive surgical options to the community.
To celebrate the program’s success, the hospital will host two events on June 6 to allow the Los Angeles community to experience robotic surgical technology first-hand. At the first event, from 12 to 1 p.m., Dr. James McPherson will present the clinical benefits of a minimally invasive approach and demonstrate how the robot works. As a leader in the field of minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery, Dr. McPherson will also discuss robot-assisted surgery data, including recovery time spent in the hospital and complication rates. Physicians and medical professionals are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided.
Later that afternoon, the hospital will have a family-friendly open house for the public. Adults and children will have the chance to sit at the controls of the da Vinci robot and see what it’s like to perform robotic surgery. The open house will also feature a discussion with Dr. Marcus, at 4 p.m., on what robotic technology means to the future of surgery. Dr. Marcus will also lead a question-and-answer session. Open-house attendees will be entered into a drawing to win an iPad.
Dr. Marcus is particularly excited to explain the system to the public because he himself has seen it from a different perspective a child’s.
“My sons fourth-grade class recently visited the hospital to try out the system, and it made them so excited about the field of medicine,” he said. “Kids think robots are cool, and that enthusiasm may encourage them to become the next generation of talented surgeons. This is amazing technology, and I think the community will find it just as fascinating as those grade-schoolers did.
The da Vinci Si Surgical System allows surgeons to achieve precision and steadiness in surgery that the human hand and brain alone cannot match. Marina Hospital uses the da Vinci Surgical System in several surgical specialties, including general, thoracic, gynecological, colorectal and urological surgery.

About Dr. James McPherson
Dr. James McPherson III received a degree in chemistry from the University of Southern California, after which he attended the Tulane University School of Medicine where he graduated with the dual degree of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health. Upon completing his medical education in New Orleans, Dr. McPherson began a five-year internship and residency in general surgery at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, followed by a three-year fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at USC. Dr. McPherson joined the faculty of the Keck USC School of Medicine in 1998 as Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is the founder and medical director of the Los Angeles Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Group and has a proven clinical track record of innovation both in and outside of the operating room. Dr. McPherson specializes in minimally invasive approaches to heart, lung and vascular (circulation) disease. Performing surgery through smaller incisions enables his patients to resume active living sooner and with less pain. Dr. McPherson has made numerous television, radio and print media appearances speaking about cardiovascular health, lung cancer prevention and treatment.
About Dr. Daniel Marcus
Dr. Daniel Marcus is a general surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery. Dr. Marcus received his B.S. degree at UCLA and his M.D. degree at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel, and completed his General Surgery residency at the world-renowned Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York, and at Columbia Presbyterian in Manhattan. His passion for minimally invasive surgery began during his fellowship in laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery at Oregon Health Sciences in Portland, Oregon. He is currently the chief of surgery at Marina Del Rey Hospital. When he is not in surgery, Dr. Marcus is committed to the research and development of less-invasive procedures that offer patients reduced scarring and minimal pain and healing time. He is a consultant for several companies developing new procedures and instrumentation for less-invasive surgical procedures. He has been published in numerous medical journals, and he continues to teach and lecture in the field of minimally invasive surgery.
