With experience from the blackjack tables and being a serial entrepreneur, Ma sheds new light on work and motivation. Ma is most well known for his involvement in the infamous MIT Blackjack Team that took Las Vegas by storm. The actions of Ma and his team inspired the book “Bringing Down the House” and the movie “21”. In Mas time at the blackjack table he learned the value of calculated risk taking, which he now applies to business.
Counting cards is not the only thing Ma is good at; Ma co-founded Citizen Sports, where he brought the world of sports to social networking sites such as Facebook. Yahoo acquired Citizen Sports in 2010. During a hiatus from the business world, Ma wrote and promoted his book The House Advantage: Playing the Odds to Win Big in Business.
Ma is now the CEO of tenXer, a San Francisco based startup with the vision to make work better and your work better by giving you the tools to better understand your performance, progress, and productivity. tenXer uses data from places where people conduct their work such as email and uses that information in social and game-mechanics to motivate.
Between playing the odds, and discovering ways to motivate, Ma will provide a perspective to Crowdsortium members that allow them to think of work in a new way. “I believe that looking at stats and being aware of how one works can help not only athletes but employees improve their work output. Just as in crowdsourcing, it is about disrupting how we currently work to perform and produce more effectively,” said Ma.
