Manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, the da Vinci Robot Surgical System was approved by The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2000 for use in minor surgeries and was anticipated to be more efficient for the doctors, less invasive for the patients and limit the risk of error and malpractice. However, since its approval, the popularity of the device has resulted in its use for a broader range of procedures, which has cast light on the possible side effects the da Vinci system may pose. CNBC reported that complaints and reported injuries focus on the lack of insulation on the robots arms, which causes burns and damage to the surrounding tissue (i). Additionally, other reports claim that the lack of training or experience with the device has led to doctors misusing the robot and causing injuries such as perforations and other damage (i). The new infographic details how over the course of the products use on the market that the amount of alleged injuries resulting from the device have increased. In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association of 264,758 women, it was found that the risk of injury increases when a procedure is done incorporating the da Vinci Robot as compared to other surgical methods (ii).
Intuitive Surgical has been criticized for the manner in which the da Vinci device was marketed. With hospitals and healthcare providers striving to improve their image and advertise to patients how technologically advanced they are, the employment of the da Vinci Robot is compelling option (iii). However, as the Wall Street Journal reports, with the average cost of the device between $ 1 million and $ 2.25 million with hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for maintenance, many hospitals that opted to purchase the system do not have the adequate resources to fund training for the doctors using it (iv). In fact, the same article reports that even smaller hospitals are engaging in the medical arms race for the ability to advertise technological health advancements, as Paul Levy, chief executive of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston stated.
