Course Description
Through a series of practical exercises based on real case studies, this one-day course provides a broad introduction to media-focused PR for small businesses. You will learn how the media works, what makes a good story and how to create powerful press releases that maximise your chances of being noticed by journalists. You will leave with lots of practical ideas for getting free publicity for your business.

This is a one day course (10am – 4pm) and will include workshop exercises, small group activities, group discussion and feedback. It will cover: 

How the media works
An overview of the various categories of media, different kinds of news content and key publications.

What is and isn't news
A look at the media from a journalist's perspective – what makes something newsworthy?

Identifying and creating media opportunities
In-depth look at the two main categories of news – 'natural' (stories based on what you are already doing) and 'generated' (stories created specifically to get into the media).

The perfect press release
A 'Masterclass' covering best practice in writing and distributing press releases.

Identifying and contacting journalists
How to find and approach journalists who have a genuine interest in your business.

Dealing with journalists
Tips and advice on dealing with journalists – what to say, what not to say and how to build constructive working relationships.

Making the most of your media coverage
PR doesn't stop when your story has been printed – this session looks at ways to increase the impact and longevity of media coverage.
