Egypt’s president fires intelligence chief

Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi has fired his spy chief Murad Muwafi in a major shake-up of military and intelligence ranks extending to the head of the Republican Guard and the governor of North Sinai. Wednesday’s decision comes several days after a deadly ambush in Sinai killed 16 soldiers, prompting an unprecedented military crackdown in the peninsula, but Morsi’s spokesman did not say whether the attack had prompted the changes. Morsi also ordered Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the defence minister, to replace the head of military police Hamdi Badeen, his spokesman Yassir Ali said in a televised statement on Wednesday. Al Jazeera’s Jamal Elshayyal reports from Sinai.

  2. This incident will most benefit the current new Egyptian President, Mohamed Morsi. By replacing the generals with ones who support him, he will gain the control of the military.

  3. I’m not sure that Mubarak dealt with the fanatics with an iron fist. in 2009, a similar terrorist attack occurred, killing some Egyptian security forces in the same are and not much was done. Not much was done when Hotels in the Sinai were bombed and tourists attacked in the middle 2000’s. IMO, Egypt is reacting now more than before because Morsi needs to show the world he’s in charge and the Sinai is not going to become like Afghanistan.

  4. Exactly . The Egyptians could of / can send in special forces to have dealt with the situation , but they do not . Mubarak for all his faults , dealt with the fanatics with an iron fist , history willl show if Mohamed Morsi will .

  5. up until a few days ago, Egypt stationed less soldiers that it was allowed in the agreement with Israel. the problem was never the amount of Egyptian police personal / guards on the boarder, but the lack of action by them. I served on the Israeli side 3 periods since 2001, and it always seems that the Egyptian troops are getting paid to allow Beduin smugglers in and out, instead of guarding the boarder.

  6. remember the rightwing facist zionists of Israel haven’t signed the nuclear non proliferation treaty. Israel has no backbone. They are the lowest in morality and ethics and will use their nukes on non nuke nations.
