Former AMR Corp and American Airline CEO Joins Hipmunk Board of Directors

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 19, 2012

Hipmunk, the most comprehensive travel site, today announced that Robert L. Crandall has joined the board as an independent. Hipmunk, which raised a $ 15M Series B round of financing in June, now has five total board members including Crandall, Hipmunk co-founders Adam Goldstein and Steve Huffman, Brad Silverberg of Ignition Partners and Todd Chaffee of Institution Venture Partners (IVP). Previously, Crandall served as CEO of AMR Corp and American Airlines for 25 years.

“We are thrilled to have Bob join us. He is a brilliant businessman, and his innovation and leadership at American Airlines have made him a legend in the airline industry, said Adam Goldstein, CEO and co-founder of Hipmunk. “He brings a deep understanding of company operations, finances, and importantly an understanding of supplier distribution. Bob will help us generate value for our partners and users.

During his tenure at American Airlines, Crandall sponsored a project to modernize American’s SABRE computer reservations system, laying the groundwork for what eventually became The SABRE Group, now a leading provider of computing and communications services for airlines throughout the world. Crandall also created Super Saver fares, introducing the concept of deep discounts for advance-purchase tickets and led the development of the industry’s first yield management system, a revenue-maximizing approach now used throughout the airline industry. Crandall also pioneered the industrys first frequent flyer program by creating AAdvantage.

I am looking forward to working with Adam and Steve, both of whom have distinguished themselves in the rapidly changing world of e-commerce, said Crandall. As travel and tourism continues to grow, Hipmunk will give consumers a more comprehensive way to access their many options.
