About This Workshop

Who's it for?

This class is for people comfortable with HTML and CSS who want to start learning how to write programs using JavaScript and jQuery. During this one-day class, you will develop the foundation you’ll need in order to start on the path of becoming an effective JavaScript developer.

We don’t assume any knowledge of JavaScript, but because this class will focus heavily on learning via in-class exercises, we do want to make sure that you’re able to follow along and understand basic coding concepts. To that end, you’ll want to make sure that you’re comfortable answering the questions here – or at least making educated guesses – in order to get the most out of the class.

What you'll learn:

This one-day class runs from 9:30am to 5pm, including morning refreshments and lunch.

This class is aimed at introducing you to fundamental concepts of development using JavaScript. In this class, you’ll work through the process of building a simple game of hangman; along the way, you’ll learn about functions, arrays, objects, and prototypes, and get a brief introduction to the jQuery library. You’ll also learn about approaches that will help you write more maintainable code, and get introduced to tools for debugging and testing your JavaScript.

You’ll learn how to:

  • develop a simple program in a web browser using JavaScript and jQuery
  • debug your JavaScript code
  • follow practices that promote code that is readable, maintainable, and reusable

This class will give you a solid understanding of core JavaScript concepts, as well as an introduction to the jQuery JavaScript library. Upon completion of this class, you’ll be well-equipped to continue your JavaScript learning, and to apply your new skills to basic JavaScript challenges.

Attendees should bring a laptop with WiFi and a power cord, ready with a code editor and and browser. We strongly recommend the Google Chrome browser.

We also recommend one of the following text editors for Mac: Sublime Text 2, TextMate, MacVim, Coda or Windows: E TextEditor, Notepad++, UltraEdit, but the most important thing is that attendees use a text editor they're comfortable with.
