On April 21, Google plans to change its search-engine algorithm once again — this time, to favor websites that are equipped with mobile-friendly web design.
According to PC Magazine (2/27/15), Google will begin ranking sites that have been optimized for use on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets higher than sites without this responsive web design.
The change comes as a growing body of research shows that more people are preferring to access the web on mobile devices. Mobile web usage surpassed desktop usage for the first time in history last year, signifying a huge consumer demand for more mobile-friendly websites.
Veteran online marketing and white label SEO agency HubShout, LLC predicted the importance web design — and mobile-friendly web design — would hold throughout 2015 based on its recent market research.
Chad Hill, CEO and Co-Founder, says this market survey’s results revealed that small businesses plan to invest more heavily in web development and design during 2015.
“The market research we conducted at the end of 2014 confirms that small business see websites and SEO as the two most important parts of their online marketing mix,” Hill explains. “We found that in 2015, website development services will be second in demand only to search engine optimization (SEO) for small businesses.”
And as more consumers come to expect mobile-friendly web design from the sites they visit, Hill says it will be important for small businesses across the country to invest in things like responsive web design, which allows a website to adapt to the dimensions of the device on which it’s being viewed.
“Nearly two-thirds of the online marketing experts we surveyed said their clients plan to increase their online marketing budgets by some amount this year,” Hill says. “It’s absolutely reasonable to assume this increase is due to the growth in demand for mobile-friendly website design.”
Ultimately, Hill says he believes web design and development will continue to hold a crucial place in any business’ online marketing campaign.
“Since our company was created in 2008, the world of online marketing has changed dramatically — but the same basic principles remain the same,” he says. “It has been interesting to see website development and SEO converge to form the backbone of a successful online marketing strategy over the years. With a well-designed and mobile-friendly website, a small business’ chances for success rise dramatically.”
