McKenna (Macky) was a vibrant 7-year-old girl who in 2011 came down with what seemed like the flu. Shortly thereafter, McKenna was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric brain cancer, abbreviated as DIPG. McKenna’s courageous and admirable struggle concluded just six months following diagnosis.
MinuteHound proudly supports the McKenna Claire Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, fighting for a cure to a disease for which there is currently no successful treatment. The two organizations first came together at the Internet Marketing Association’s Impact13 Conference.
Oxford Dictionary defines “time” as: the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole. We cannot feel, see or touch time. As a result, time is all too often unappreciated.
The median overall survival time of children diagnosed with DIPG is approximately 9 months. Time becomes much more concrete when placed in that context. Therein lies a fundamental truth: time is chiefly appreciated when its quantity is limited.
Time is always precious; its value does not literally change. What changes is our perceptions when a diagnosis illuminates time’s true value.
American culture glorifies tough workers who do anything to get the job done. Employees are eager to prove their toughness and dedication. Hourly personnel may work “off the clock,” continuing to work unpaid until the job gets done. But unpaid labor is unhappy labor. Unhappy labor is bad for business
Here’s how to stop it:
Remind employees that your business model and calculations are built around hourly labor.
Explain that schedule deviation can actually hurt the business by misidentifying the cost of production.
Teach employees time management. For example, if it takes 30 minutes to assemble a widget, and an employee only has 15 minutes left on their shift, the employee should not begin assembly. Rather, he should do something else with the remaining time, such as clean the workstation.
“Off the clock” labor also poses potential legal liability. Employees can sue for unpaid wages. Even if employees don’t sue, government agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, may intervene on employees’ behalf. Employees and authorities can bring such claims up to three years after the violations occurred!
Time is precious because its quality is priceless. Once time is gone we can never get it back. Few things in life are so valuable and absolute. Employees appreciate spending precious time with their families. Family time improves peoples’ moods. Good mood translates into increased productivity at work. An employee with a proper work/family balance is happier and more effective than one who resentfully works off the clock.
Undoubtedly, some of your employees will eventually learn their child has cancer. Overall, cancer is the #1 cause of disease related death in children.
