Based at Morley College London, Morley Medieval was founded in 1985, in response to requests from students of medieval art for ways of extending the range of their studies. The Society hosts guest lectures in the Autumn and Spring terms by leading scholars on a wide range of research topics. Cultural visits are arranged during the summer months. Programme 2017 Lectures are held in B13 at Morley College London. Doors open at 6.20pm for a 6.50pm start. These are ticketed at £5 and sold on a first come, first served basis. Guests will be welcome, subject to availability – please check with the Secretary.  20th Jan:    Dr Jeremy Ashbee, English Heritage The Great Towers of Anglo-Norman Castles in the 11th and 12th Centuries 17th March: Dr Niamh Whitfield, Independent Researcher Christian Symbolism on the Ardagh Chalice, an Early Medieval Masterpiece from Ireland 31st March: Dr James Hillson, Emmanuel College, Cambridge What is a Window? Description, Drawing & Architectural Transmision between France & England, 1200-1400 The Autumn term will have lectures on 13th October [to include the AGM], 10th November & 8th December. Details to follow. Trips. 6th May:   Day visit to four churches near Cambridge: Burwell, Swaffham Prior, Swaffham Bulbeck and Bottisham, led by Richard Halsey. Now fully booked, but details available from Rosemary Clarke, as above. 21st-27th June: A Continental tour, based in Medieval Le Mans, to include visits to sites on the Loir and Sarthe; with a focus on the Romanesque and a wealth of wall painting. Now fully booked, but if you are interested, please contact Ann Hignell, as above. 22nd August: Day visit to Framlingham & Orford Castles, led by Dr Jeremy Ashbee. PLEASE NOTE: there is a fee for membership and our events, and they must be arranged by contacting the relevant officers direct, as mentioned above. 20th September: Morley College is holding a Penny Lecture, entitled: King John: the Road to Magna Carta, given by Marc Morris, and based on his recent book, King John: Treachery, Tyranny and the Road to Magna Carta. The lecture will be held in the Emma Cons Hall, at the College, between 1730 and 1830. Admission: 1p. Please contact the College for further information.
