A lot of musicians do a fair amount of bragging to fans even though they may see it as good music industry marketing. Sharing numbers about views, listens, likes and friends however, can be poor social media promotion and actual insult your fans. Views, likes, pins, friends and listens are great things and can be used for music marketing with industry people. But when you make statements like… I cant believe I just hit 4000 fans or I am so thrilled to have 10000 twitter followers, it can be viewed as bad promotion and marketing as well as showing off and being rude to the fans that were around when you were in the single digits. Taking the approach of consideration and respect to both old fans and new will put you in a better light with both of those parties. Find other things to post, market and promote besides the numbers and leave those numbers and that style of music industry marketing for those directly a part of the music industry. In music mentor sessions, I don’t tell musicians and bands exactly what to say to their fans, I prefer to ask them to think about what they are going to say and think about how it can be perceived by an old fan, a new fan and a stranger. When they come up with a post, a blog, a video or anything that takes in to consideration all those people, it will be something good to post
