Gettysburg, PA (PRWEB) August 27, 2012
Dr. Rebecca Klemm, the founder and executive director of NumbersAlive!, has received the 2012 Book of the Year award in the educational travel books for kids category by Creative Child Magazine for her book “NumbersAlive! Books for Young Travelers: Washington, DC.” The educational book heightens numerical literacy among young readers while it introduces children to mathematical concepts using the backdrop of the nationals capital as the source for adventure and learning.
“NumbersAlive! Books for Young Travelers: Washington, DC” is the first title in a planned childrens book series designed to encourage children to understand and identify numbers and relate them to applications in their own surroundings at a formative early-childhood stage of learning. Accompanied by a colorful cast of animated number characters 0-9, Team Ten, young readers from prekindergarten through fifth grade can further their understanding of applied numbers and establish a solid foundation for mathematical skills.
Klemm is an experienced educator who has taught statistics and mathematics at the middle school, high school, and university levels. To address the urgent need to engage young people and caring adults in a friendly approach to improving numerical literacy, she became The Numbers Lady and created Zero the Hero and Team Ten to lead children on innovative, interpersonal, and interactive global education quests. Her approach is designed to use the arts and real-world adventures to encourage children to observe and speak about numbers in their own environments.
In “Numbers Alive! Books for Young Travelers: Washington, DC,” the Team Ten characters take readers along for a tour of relevant historical sites in the nations capital as they introduce number recognition concepts, such as the five sides of the Pentagon building and the nine justices of the Supreme Court. The book also contains material for parents and educators that offer additional facts about the sites highlighted in the main text and further educational applications for using the book at home or at school.
NumbersAlive! is proud to accept both Book of the Year and Top Toy of the Year 2012 from Creative Child Magazine, Klemm said. This is an exciting recognition following the launch of our numerical literacy program using fun and friendly number characters, and we are working to build on this progress to spread the educational program and materials to a global audience.
Klemm was assisted by Jeff Johnson, a Graphcom, Inc. business development specialist with more than 26 years of printing experience. Johnson supervised the seamless coordination of all printing aspects of the books production. From all compliments we have received, ‘NumbersAlive! Books for Young Travelers: Washington, DC’ has exceeded expectations and has set the standard for upcoming titles in the NumbersAlive! series, Johnson said.
