The Obamacare website has been plagued with technical difficulties since it went live at the beginning of the month. But despite a Republican-led outcry over the problems, the site is functionaland Jason Hennessey, co-founder of EverSpark Interactive, says it’s not a bad website.
Healthcare.gov is the official portal of the Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare. The website exists so that US citizens can shop for and compare health insurance plans available under the law. Since it opened to the public October 1 users have experienced registration errors and slow loading times according to CNN (10.22.2013).
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebeliusm, whose agency is is responsible for the website, has stated that these glitches will be fixed by mid-November. But beyond the connectivity issues Hennessey says the website is well built.
They made the site easy to use, Hennessey said. For a project like this the number one design goal should be an intuitive registration process, and if when the site is working they’ve really succeeded in that.
That’s because the basic registration process is simple, Hennessey says, starting with entering basic information, then choosing a state and shopping for plans.
Healthcare.gov is meant to be a menu of affordable insurance plans, he said. The developers made it quick and easy to get to that menu. Easier than many privately owned business websites.
Hennessey did spot problems, however.
If you enter the wrong state or there’s a problem with your information, you’re on your own, he said. Any web form should tell you which field you got wrong. It’s a basic principle of good user interface. But with Healthcare.gov you have to hit ‘back’ and guess.
Fixing that one problem could dramatically reduce the number of users getting stuck, Hennessey says.
The website is good overall. But it could use some tweaking.
