The number of San Jose State University PRSSA members requesting to be paired with a mentor in 2013 has more than doubled from the previous year. According to Mar Junge, c3PR principal and chair of PRSA Silicon Valleys Mentorship Program, more than 35 PR students have requested to be matched with industry professionals.
To address this and other issues facing new communications professionals, PRSA-SV will present its signature Future of PR 2013 event on February 6, 2013. This invitation-only event brings together leaders of the Valleys corporate PR teams, PR agencies and start-up companies for an intimate and interactive discussion about the opportunities and challenges facing PR professionals. Panel Moderator Steve Barrett, Editor in Chief of PRWeek, will engage panelists and the audience in an energetic debate about what it takes to reach the pinnacle of the PR profession today.
We launched the Mentorship Program in 2011 and last year the majority of our graduating PR mentees landed jobs in the industry, thanks in part to help from their mentors, Junge said. This year we are faced with several challenges, including how to scale the program to accommodate more mentees and engage more mentors. Junge spoke about the benefits of mentorship last night at PRSSAs first meeting of the new semester. Joining her on the podium were Mentorship Committee Members Elisabeth Handler, president and COO of PRx, and Megan Wymer, San Jose Flea Market social media and digital marketing coordinator. In addition to being Junges mentee, Wymer is a recent SJSU graduate and former PRSSA officer.
This month marked the twelfth anniversary of National Mentoring Month. In his proclamation, President Obama said, A supportive mentor can mean the difference between struggle and success. As we mark this important occasion, I encourage all Americans to spend time as a mentor and help lift our next generation toward their hopes and dreams.
