Taking a leaf out of the David versus Goliath aspect of the Americas Cup campaign, where we are all so proud of the Emirates Team New Zealand effort, the Westpac Auckland Central Business Awards 2013 can reveal that Auckland has its own Davids getting ready to take on the Goliaths. Auckland Chamber of Commerce CEO, Michael Barnett believes this years Westpac Auckland Central Business Awards have revealed an increasing number of small companies who are challenging the big players for a place in the market. Through the platform of technology, innovative business models, collaborations and partnerships, these small and medium businesses are adaptable and fast-growing.
Pure SEOs Richard Conway, founder and CEO of his search engine optimisation company, has been elected as a finalist in the competition this year in the Best Emerging Business Award category, testament to his companys rapid growth over the last five years. As Richard says, “As an honorary Kiwi, Im happy to report the business has thrived in this country, where we punch above our weight in tech innovation and engagement. What any web-centric Kiwi business struggles with, though, is simple lack of access its hard to keep up with whats going on in the forefront of our field internationally.”
For this reason and others, I was thrilled when Pure SEO was named the New Zealand winner of the 2013 Google Engage All-Stars competition in July. The competition for online agencies has been run twice before, both times in 2012, but this was the first time it was open to companies outside the USA. The digital marketing agencys win meant a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. In Mid-August I spent two days at Google HQ, the Googleplex, in SanFrancisco, talking to other practitioners from the US, Canada, the UK, Argentina, Mexico and Australia. When we werent networking or sightseeing, we were soaking up advice from some of the smartest, most creative people in our industry.
As one of this years finalists, Pure SEOs achievements are a reflection of the success of the outstanding business hub which represents the accomplishments of small and medium businesses in the Auckland region. Twenty Auckland companies and three individuals have been selected as the finalists in the Westpac awards, representing businesses across a wide spectrum of industries.
The category winners and the overall winner of the Westpac Supreme Business Excellence Award will be announced at a black-tie gala dinner at the Langham Hotel, Auckland on Thursday 7 November.
