Geo Tactical Solutions, Inc. and Ricoh Americas Corporation have announced a new GPS module for the rugged G700SE digital camera that offers an advanced solution for precise, secure and portable military-grade geotagging. Available in August 2012, the thumb-sized SE-7M GPS module will add several important capabilities to the G700SE camera in support of geospatial photo/video capture, mapping, analysis and reporting. Noteworthy features of the new SE-7M module include greater speed and accuracy of GPS readings, object geotagging, descriptive memos, SAASM compatibility, GPS track-logs, multiple GPS coordinate formats, electronic compass, and GIS integration.
The SE-7M module gives the military and other users important new capabilities for fast, precise and secure geotagging under less-than-ideal conditions, said Yuki Uchida, Vice President, New Business Development, Ricoh Americas Corporation. Theres a lot going on in this ultra-compact module to help soldiers and others to be more successful in their work.
The SE-7M module, which sets a new standard in global positioning system (GPS) speed and accuracy, offers a more compact and convenient geotagging solution than traditional systems requiring a laptop-camera combination. The SE-7M can also generate sub-meter GPS location coordinates, which is far more precise than consumer-grade products. For even better accuracy, the SE-7M is forward-compatible to 18-satellite GPS processing, a military standard scheduled to take effect in 2016.
The camera/module combination (G700SE-M) supports up to 20 customizable memo fields for tagging photographs with valuable data. Example memo tags include photographers name, operation ID, operation type, unit ID and so on. This information, along with GPS coordinates, GPS date and Zulu time, are automatically stored as metadata in each digital image file on the G700SE-M camera and later used for image processing, mapping and reporting.
Memos are set by the operator before collecting photographs to automate the process of recording complete who, what, when, where and why information for each photo, explained Andy Shannon, Director of Business Development at Geo Tactical Solutions. Collecting this information not only transforms a photograph into a powerful information source, it keeps photographs organized by common attributes and facilitates more complete, accurate and simplified mapping and reporting during data processing.
Electronic Compass and GPS Track-Logs:
The SE-7Ms electronic compass allows users to accurately record the direction a photograph is taken regardless of the angle the camera is held. In addition, the SE-7Ms GPS Track-Log feature can record and map the geographic path by which photographs are collected. After images are collected in the field, data is uploaded using the cameras built-in wireless, Bluetooth or USB connection in preparation for mapping, analysis and reporting.
In addition to geotagging the position of the camera (i.e. the photographer), laser range finders may be connected wirelessly to the SE-7M module via Bluetooth or by cable connection to record distance and GPS coordinates of objects within photographs. The SE-7M module combines the range finders data with GPS positional data to calculate the location of an object within a photograph.
Multiple GPS Formats:
All GPS coordinates collected with the SE-7M module may be stored and displayed in a variety of formats including LAT/LONG, MGRS, Decimal Degrees, DMS, UTM and State Plane depending on user requirements.
The SE-7Ms SAASM compatibility provides accurate GPS readings even in the presence of malicious jamming or spoofing. Secure and decrypted GPS signals are recorded by connecting an external GPS SAASM device such as a DAGR (Defense Advanced GPS Receiver) to the SE-7M module. This powerful feature ensures the accuracy and precision of GPS coordinates in a GPS-compromised environment.
Digital photographs collected using the Ricoh G700SE-M (G700SE + SE-7M module) can be converted into a number of file formats suitable for mapping in popular GIS applications such as ArcGIS, FalconView, TIGR, GeoSuite, Google Earth and more.
