Class Outline


In this two-hour class, you will learn how to integrate social media into your sales cycle. This class is designed for business professionals that need to sell as part of their jobs and have at least a basic understanding of how social networks work.

First, we'll start with an overview of the top social networks and how business professionals can best use them. We will also focus on how to optimize your profiles to increase your personal SEO.Those networks include:

  • LinkedIn
  • Slideshare
  • Google+
  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Twitter 

Next, we'll focus on finding new business leads and deepening client relationships using LinkedIn and Twitter. On LinkedIn, we'll discuss how to:

  • Use LinkedIn's advanced search engine to discover potential clients
  • Connect with people whom you do not know personally
  • Join and contribute meaningfully to a public or private group
  • Follow a company's LinkedIn activities to understand its changing dynamics and needs
  • Evaluate LinkedIn events listings to do background research ahead of conferences and seminars
  • Use Card Munch, a free app owned by LinkedIn, to quickly upload your business cards into LinkedIn 

On Twitter, we'll discuss how to:

  • Create a monitoring system to discover people talking about your company, product and/or service
  • Also discover people talking about the area in which your company can solve a need
  • Use hashtags to talk about a topic or to participate in a live Twitter chat 
  • Share content in a meaningful way and avoid actual "selling" that can turn off other Twitter users.

Finally, we'll leave plenty of time for questions about social media etiquette as it applies to business professionals. The overall goal of the class is for you to leave with an understanding of how social media can shorten your sales cycle and also deepen your relationship with your clients.

Additional Information

A light lunch will be available beginning at 1:00 p.m. Class will begin at 1:30 p.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. sharp.

Handouts will be provided. You do not need to bring a laptop unless you want to use it to take notes.

About Our Instructor

Tracy Samantha Schmidt is the director Crain's Social Media Group, a new division of Crain Communications. Social media has been central to her career in both the media and higher education.

As a reporter at Time Magazine, she covered a range of topics–including the rise of social media. She joined the Chicago Tribune in 2008 and co-created ChicagoNow, now one of Chicago's largest websites. Meanwhile, she taught several graduate-level classes on social media at DePaul University.

Those classes became the foundation for a nationwide social media education program Tracy created at Tribune in 2011. To date, more than 5,000 people have participated in that program. 

Tracy has also presented private seminars for organizations including JP Morgan Chase, the National Association of Realtors and the National Assocation of Broadcasters.
