Two dance works by Brazil's Grupo Corpo
A staple of the Harbourfront Centre's World Stage shows, Brazilian dance collective Grupo Corpo returns to Toronto with a double bill, Sem Mim and Ímã. Founded in 1975 by Paulo Pederneiras, Grupo Corpo is acclaimed for the way it blends traditional ballet with contemporary updates of Brazilian and world dance styles.
Sem Mim, the title of which translates as “Without Me”, involves tattooed dancers mimicking the sea's rhythm, set to medieval Portuguese-Galician chants. Ímã, or “Magnet”, is a choreographic expression of the concept of magnetism, in which the performers both connect and separate in ways that symbolize polarity.
