Statistics from Experian Hitwise have highlighted the growing trend of online shopping over the festive season. It has been reported that UK consumers made 84 million visits to retail websites on Christmas Eve and 107 million on Christmas day, achieving an increase of 86% and 71% respectively in comparison to last year. Amazon beat eBay to the spot of most visited e-commerce site on Christmas day with more than 12% of all visits.
However, when it comes to online activity, Boxing Day beat both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with UK consumers spending more than 14 million hours online, making more than 113 million visits to online retail sites.
Naturally intrigued by any news within the online world, the team at Essex-based agency, SEO Positive were quick to respond to the findings. Managing Director, Ben Austin, shares his thoughts on why these figures might be so high.
Obviously the internet is expanding year on year and online retailers know they have more rivals to compete with and so appear to have upped their marketing. Early discounting is also largely responsible for the increased visits to sites.
The growing trend of using handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets to access the internet has also made it easier for people to access such sites over the festive period, explains Ben.
