Shawn Colvin – Residency with Diego Garcia
Event on 2012-10-27 20:00:00
Shawn Colvin returns to City Winery for three special nights in October 2012. Her last appearances were sold out celebrations of her inimitable voice and matchless guitar stylings, and this year’s shows are sure to be no different.
In an era when female singer-songwriters are ever more ubiquitous. Shawn Colvin stands out as singular and enduring talent. Her songs are works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners. As a storyteller Colvin is both keen and warm-hearted leavening even the toughest tales with tenderness, empathy and a searing sense of humor. In the 22 years since the release of her debut album Colvin has won three Grammy Awards, released ten albums, maintained a nearly non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures and created a remarkable cannon of work.
Combined sales of her albums total more than 2.5 million copies in the US alone, and Colvin maintains a year-round touring scheduled. Over the years Shawn has shared the stage with such legendary artists as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby, Emmylou Harris, Don Henley and Lyle Lovett. She appears regularly in a group called Three Girls and their Buddy a “singer-songwriter supergroup” comprised of Shawn, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller.
Shawn Colvin’s latest album, All Fall Down, is her eighth studio album and the first to be produced by her longtime friend and cohort Buddy Miller (Robert Plant, Solomon Burke). Recorded in Nashville, with a group of stellar musicians, the album features performances by Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Jakob Dylan, Bill Frisell, Viktor Krauss, Brian Blade, Stuart Duncan, and Julie Miller.
The new album was recorded in Miller’s home studio, and each song is deeply personal to Colvin, who describes All Fall Down as “an album about loss but also about redemption and resolution.” The release was simultaneous with her William Morrow/HarperCollins–published memoir, Diamond In The Rough, which insightfully and candidly looks back over a rich lifetime of highs and lows. The wit, lyricism, and empathy found in the book are traits that have long characterized Colvin’s songwriting and her live performances.
ABOUT DIEGO GARCIA
Born in Detroit to Argentine parents, Diego Garcia traces his diverse roots on his debut solo album, 'Laura.' Garcia was inspired by the loss of love and the classic troubadour movement. "Artists like Sandro, Roberto Carlos and Julio Iglesias were early pioneers in a movement of romanticism in music. It only made sense for me to pick up where they left off," he says.
It is the fusion of these Latin influences with the era's "Anglo" visionaries, artists like David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, and Bryan Ferry that makes this project truly special. With lush string arrangements, delicate Spanish guitars, and distinctly Latin flavor, the new album is worlds apart from Garcia's former band Elefant, a post-punk rock band that entered the music scene alongside The Strokes and Interpol. What remains a constant in Garcia's new work is the romantic within and the distinctly modern sound.
"For the last four years, I've been following my instincts in search for a new sound. A sound that could properly deliver my message on love, or I should say, the 'malady of love.' Minor keys, cello, nylon classical guitars, light drums, and wooden tambourines helped create a vibe for me to whisper the words in her ear," Garcia explains. "So with each new song came a little healing until I eventually started feeling 'better.' The irony is that as soon as I accepted closure, my heart opened up and the sound was born. I was ready to love again."
Garcia's first single, "You Were Never There," paved a foundation for the new project. RCRD LBL pledged its support early on saying, "With a flickering, old school touch, Diego Garcia's croon is one for the bedroom. 'You Were Never There' is today's aural aphrodisiac- a gentle flush of guitars and strings, yelping hooks, and love-worn lyrics." PAPER Magazine raved, "I can't stop listening to it… The tune has lush string arrangements, guitars and vocal intonation. It's romantic and blissful."
