Social Media Agency fishbat, Voted Best on Long Island, Helps Fight Social Media Addiction

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) March 07, 2013

On March 7, in response to a new study that demonstrates the prevalence of social media addiction, the award-winning social media agency fishbat, Inc. issues a comment.

According to Euronews, researchers from the University of Chicago determined that social networking can be more addictive than nicotine and alcohol. Euronews also reports that researchers at the University of North Carolina found that a shot of dopamine is released into the brain if the [users] posts get a like on Facebook or are re-tweeted on Twitter.

Euronews reports that those addicted to social media express symptoms such as spending more than five hours per day on a social media website; withdrawal symptoms if the sites are not working or your Internet connection is down and if you have used a smartphone to check while at the wheel of a car.

Author and illustrator Gemini Adams is a self-confessed addict. According to Euronews, Adams has tried to replace her addiction to Facebook by shunning the website and taking up yoga, an activity deemed to be part of her digital de-tox.

I work from home and as a writer and someone who does a lot of research I found that it was on permanently and I might write for 20 minutes and I would go on Facebook for a moment just to check a few things, she said. But I think whats dangerous about it is that you do go on for a few seconds just to check, or a feed or something. And yet somehow youre still sitting there 30 minutes later and half an hour of your time has just disappeared.

Adams told Euronews that she knew she was hooked once her Facebook habit started causing her to feel a little sensation: an urge to monitor the comments made on one of her posts. I used to be a smoker and its very similar, that sort of sensation. Needing to have something, needing to go and do something.

fishbat CEO Clay Darrohn describes social media addiction as a winning battle, rather than an uphill one. Internet and social media addiction are unlike chemical addictions that can destroy your body. The dependency is rooted in a kind of psychological reward response that you become conditioned to. If you see yourself spending too much time on Facebook or Twitter, put your phone down, turn off the computer and go outside.

Just regulate your digital activity for a few days and your brain will reset itself after a bit that’s all it takes. Social media is all around us, but it doesnt have to consume every waking moment. Trust me I spend most of my time working hard at a social media agency, but I don’t let it get on top of me. If you like to do something that doesnt require a phone or computer, go do it.
