The Gimme 4 Foundation, a local nonprofit foundation that provides financial relief for families dealing with the struggles and treatments caused by cancer. 4/1/17 we are having our annual golf tournament to benefit Tanner McDonald, a 4 year old boy diagnosed with aggressive, stage 4 neuroblastoma. The event starts at noon and after the golf tournament there will be a raffle, auction, 50/50 and lunch. We are looking for sponsors for the tournament, any advertising to promote the event, items to be raffled or auctioned off and smaller items like gift cards etc. Harley Davidson has contacted the Gimme 4 Foundation about helping with this event, as well as several local businesses.

Baptist Health and MD Anderson Select Design Team for New Joint Cancer Center Facility

Baptist Health and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center are moving forward with the architectural design of the new Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center that will provide a home for highly coordinated, multidisciplinary cancer care for adult patients throughout our region.

HKS Architects Inc., an international company with an office in Orlando, and FreemanWhite, a Haskell Company dedicated exclusively to health care, were selected as the design team for the project, which is anticipated to open in 2018. Haskell is a leading integrated design, engineering and construction firm based in Jacksonville. Both HKS and FreemanWhite have extensive experience in the design of health care facilities, and the two firms collectively have designed nearly 140 cancer centers. Currently, HKS Architects is also designing an expansion of MD Anderson in Houston, Texas.

The new Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center will be part of the Southbank skyline, visible from I-95, and a symbol of our powerful commitment to bring a new level of cancer care to our region, said Hugh Greene, Baptist Health president and CEO. Every aspect of the facility will be designed around the unique needs of cancer patients and their caregivers.

The same cutting-edge technology, multidisciplinary approach and leading cancer care that is available in Houston will be delivered at Baptist MD Anderson in Jacksonville when it launches later this year. The design of the facility will reflect the highly collaborative and integrated approach to care which brings medical, surgical and radiation oncology physicians together to plan and deliver the patients treatment as one coordinated team. Social workers, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, and pharmacists are among the many specialists who will all work within the cancer center, providing patients with one home to meet all their oncology needs.

Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center is an opportunity to create a facility that will be a legacy for subsequent generations. With this iconic cancer center, Baptist Health will demonstrate the challenge and opportunities for discovery inherent in 21st Century cancer care, according to Carl Beers, principal of HKS Architects Inc., and Frank Brooks, CEO of Freeman White, a Haskell Company. The design process for the new Baptist MD Anderson facility will begin this month and is expected to be completed by February 2016. The new building will be located on San Marco Boulevard, across the street from the Baptist Outpatient Center, situated on the two blocks currently bordered by San Marco Boulevard, Childrens Way, Gary Street and Palm Avenue. The new building is anticipated to be more than 200,000 square feet with a dedicated 500-car parking garage and valet service for ease of patient access. Beautiful landscaping will blend with and enhance the surrounding neighborhood. Project cost has not yet been determined.

In anticipation of the launch of the joint cancer program with MD Anderson in October 2015, Baptist Health has started renovating the Baptist Outpatient Center on San Marco, which will serve as the initial home of Baptist MD Anderson.

Boyd’s Tire and Service Center Helps Raise Funds for Breast Cancer Research

In April, Boyds Tire & Service Center participated in the Bowl for a Cure fundraiser, helping to raise money for breast cancer research and the Stefanie Spielman Fund. In addition to sponsoring two bowling teams, Boyds Tire & Service Center provided printing for T-shirts to mark the event. Thanks in part to their contributions, the fund has received nearly $ 11,000 this year, which pushes the total past $ 50,000 for its four-year history.

The event was held at Sequoia Bowl in Columbus, and Boyds Tire & Service Center joined other sponsors such as Rusted Apparel, Lamberts Coffee and the mens and womens bowling teams from Ohio State University.

The fund is named for Stefanie Spielman, who died of breast cancer at the age of 42. Spielman, wife of renowned NFL linebacker Chris Spielman, lost her 11-year fight with the disease in 2009. She considered it her lifes mission to help raise awareness and money to defeat breast cancer, and established the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research in 1998. Over the years, the fund has raised $ 6.5 million for research, education and patient assistance, all through Ohio State Universitys Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

Columbus Bowl for a Cure has averaged over 300 participants in each of its five years, with bowlers from as far away as Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Parkersburg coming to help. Today, Columbus Bowl for a Cure is solidly in the top ten percent of total dollars raised for the Fund.

Teen Cancer America Supports the Moffitt Cancer Center Lounge for Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer

The first Teen and Young Adult Lounge at Moffitt Cancer Center provides patients with a dedicated area to mix and interact during treatment, addressing the unique psychosocial needs of young adults with cancer.

The dedication and ribbon cutting was given by Dr. Damon Reed, Leader of Moffitts Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Program with Rob Shapiro, Tampa Swim Across America Event Director, who provided the financial support for the facility. TCA has pledged $ 100,000 to support the ongoing development of the program.

Dr. Reed thanked Simon Davies, CEO of Teen Cancer America, for strategic advice in the design of the lounge, using the two decades of experience of Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK and TCAs facility at UCLA Hospital as the model. TCA Board Member Sally Webb represented the charity.

The facility was conceived in 2011 through Dr. Reeds conversations with patients who all shared the same sense of isolation. With the help of Shapiro, he pledged to develop a facility to help patients stop feeling alone and provide lifetime support and friendships.

Jacqueline Beaushaw, an AYA patient at Moffitt, gave advice on the design of the lounge from a patients perspective, stating, We just need a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of hospital life, where we can focus on important things such as winning at Mario Cart.

Commissioner Sandy Murman, in her opening address, stated, I am astonished with the work Moffitt does in our community. 10% of Moffitts inpatients are in the AYA age range and the lounge area will provide a being at home type of experience.
