On June 5, Plan B [the agency alternative], a River North-based advertising agency, will partner with LifeSource to host Donate Your Break, a public blood drive. This community-focused event will take place in a LifeSource donor coach outside of 116 W. Illinois (at LaSalle) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Demand for whole blood units is highest for LifeSource, the largest blood center in Illinois, during the summer months. LifeSource requires approximately 1,000 donations per day to maintain an adequate supply of blood in local Chicago hospitals.
There is no substitute or alternative for blood, those in need require willing donors to provide a plan B. Fortunately, thats what we do best, says Tom Millman, Creative Director on Plan Bs healthcare accounts. Donate Your Break is our rallying cry to River North professionalsjust down the block from your favorite coffee shop, restaurant or happy hour hotspot is the opportunity to make your summer Friday more meaningful.
The actual donation is quick, easy and painless for donors of all blood types and lasts only 10-12 minutes. However, individuals who wish to donate are encouraged to block off an hour for the entire process, which includes a mini-wellness check and post-donation snacks. In accordance with the Illinois Blood Donation Leave Act, with approval from their employers, employees are entitled to one hour of paid leave for blood donation every 56 days.

In her new book, The Rise of the Therapeutic Society: Psychological Knowledge & the Contradictions of Cultural Change, Katie Wright takes Australia as the focal point and traces the ascendancy of therapeutic culture, from nineteenth century concerns about nervousness, to the growth of psychology, the diffusion of an analytic attitude and the spread of therapy and counseling. Wrights analysis, which draws on social theory, cultural history, and interviews with therapists and people in therapy, calls into question the pessimism that pervades many accounts of the therapeutic turn and provides an alternative assessment of its ramifications for social, political, and personal life in the globalized West.
Katie Wright lives in Victoria, Australia.
This is what specialists in the field say about the book:
Wright’s work provides an important antidote to a long series of off-base polemics that misunderstand the role of psychotherapy in contemporary society. She finds the language of therapy at the heart of the new social movements. Jeffrey C. Alexander, Lillian Chavenson Saden Professor of Sociology, Yale University.
The strength of Wrights work lies in its emphasis on the complex, contradictory ways in which various aspects of our global worlds enter into the inner, emotional texture of identity as well as the processes through which the unconscious imagination constitutes fabrications of the social-historical world. Anthony Elliott, Chair of Sociology, Flinders University, Australia.
This work makes an important contribution to cultural and historical sociology. Wright argues convincingly for a reappraisal of therapeutic culture through a compelling critique of existing theory and by drawing on alternative traditions to those that have dominated scholarship in this field. The case studies she presents are intrinsically interesting and theoretically important, and her innovative perspective on the therapeutic society makes a valuable and significant contribution to the field. Socialeyes makes organizing social events quick and easy. Users simply select an activity or mood for the day on the app, choose a location or neighborhood, and tap to share with friends. The app even features social points which can be accumulated based on the amount of social activity recorded. Both the user and friends earn social points for joining social activities.
The brainchild behind Socialeyes is Can Kagitcibasi, a University of San Diego alumnus. After working for PricewaterhouseCoopers for more than two years, Can decided to pursue his a longtime dream of launching his first startup, Tum Firsatlar, the leading deal aggregator of Turkey. Can is also a member of the Startup Grind community and the director of the Turkish Chapter. He started Socialeyes in 2013 and now, leading a team of six based in Istanbul and San Francisco, has recently raised $ 250k as seed investment from angel investor Doruk Dogramaci.
The market is becoming increasingly geared towards the mobile section of connectivity, and users want innovative platforms that will give them options to do things now, to connect now, to be able to plan and also be spontenous, Kagitcibasi explains. This is where Socialeyes can make a difference as it combines a location-driven socializing platform with real-time notifications, allowing users to look more at future possibilities rather than past experiences.
Organizing meet-ups via text or social media can be time consuming. Now thanks to Socialeyes, users dont have to wonder their friends whereabouts. Meeting a group at the local coffee shop can be organized quickly and efficiently.
All activities are based on what the user feels like doing during a given day. The activities, or moods, are clearly listed and can be selected with just a tap of a finger. Right now, the app offers 12 moods, however plans for new moods are scheduled to be released in a few weeks. As the app continues to be updated, users will soon be able to create their own customized moods.
There needs to be two things for someone to socialize with a friend: proximity and the will to do an activity. That is what makes Socialeyes different than any other app out there, says Can Kagitcibasi. We care about the activities just as much as the locations.
Socialeyes boasts a user-friendly interface and incentives for users utilizing the app for daily activities. Every action on the social networking app, from a like to a comment earns the user points, taking their rank higher on the apps social scale. Clicking on another users profile shows their social activities and ranking, giving friends the opportunity to learn about their social lives as well.
The team behind Socialeyes knows that life is a social game. They strive to help their clients create a digitized social identity, because they believe socializing should be done with just a few taps.

Brownwood, Texas (PRWEB) January 17, 2015
Howard Payne University will soon offer a Master of Education in Sport and Wellness Leadership (SWELL) degree program to prepare those who are entering into or wish to advance in the sport and/or wellness industries.
Classes will begin in August for the fall 2015 semester and those interested are encouraged to attend one of two informational sessions to be held February 5 and February 19 at 6 p.m. at the Brownwood Coliseum. Complimentary light refreshments will be served and those who attend will receive free admission to the Yellow Jacket basketball games that follow. The Lady Jackets will tip off at 5:30 p.m. each evening.
The SWELL program is an affordable option for those looking to impact lives through careers that emphasize the importance of health.
Not only is SWELL the most affordable masters degree in Texas for professionals entering or employed in the sport and wellness industries, weve also designed it to be one of the most accessible, said Dr. Graham Hatcher, chair of HPUs Department of Exercise and Sport Science (ESS) and ESS professor.
The program is designed for both full-time and part-time students with most classes scheduled in the evenings to accommodate work schedules. Limited campus housing and board plans are available for those who may wish to live on campus. In addition, competitive graduate assistantships will be available to help offset the cost of tuition.
While many graduate programs across the country focus solely on either the sport industry or wellness industry, SWELL adapts the core knowledge and skill sets of each into a comprehensive program. Consequently, SWELL graduates may find greater career flexibility and opportunity for service.
Weve created a holistic program that includes instruction in a variety of topics that revolve around impacting the quality of life for American citizens, said Dr. Hatcher. As with all HPU academic programs, the SWELL courses will be enriched by the universitys faith tradition.
Courses include instruction on legal and ethical aspects of sport/wellness, marketing and public relations, event planning, resource management and more. Students will enter the SWELL program in cohort groups, beginning fall 2015. The program consists of 10 courses and 30 graduate hours, and can be completed in 20 months.
For more information about the SWELL program, visit http://www.hputx.edu/swell or e-mail swell(at)hputx(dot)edu.

In joining forces with The Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF), Uniform Advantage learnt that congenital heart defects is the number one birth defect in the world. Many babies born with this condition do not live past their first birthday and with the advancement of medical care and CHFs research, more babies are living longer with a better quality of life.
What is a congenital heart defect?
Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are problems with the hearts structure that are present at birth. Common examples include holes in the inside walls of the heart and narrowed or leaky valves. In more severe forms of CHDs, blood vessels or heart chambers may be missing, poorly formed, and/or in the wrong place.
According to CHF, with every dollar the government spends on medical funding, only a fraction of a penny is directed toward congenital heart defect research. They play a critical and instrumental role and is the only organization that was created to exclusively fund congenital heart defect research and has funded over $ 6.3 million of important, life-saving research since its inception.
Featured project from CHF how their research has impacted a childs life like Gaels.
The Children’s Heart Foundation issued a $ 71,000 grant to Christopher Caldarone, M.D. at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada for his research study entitled: “Understanding Right Ventricular Physiology in Tetralogy of Fallot. (2013). This featured research project aims to understand the abnormalities in heart muscle function found in children with TOF.
What the research means: Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a common congenital heart defect that involves a ventricular septal defect (hole in the heart), abnormal thickening of the muscle on right side of the heart, and abnormalities in the major blood vessels carrying blood away from the heart. Children typically undergo corrective surgery as an infant, but often require subsequent interventions to prevent against right heart failure.
In the immediate post-operative period, some children experience a complicated course that involves depressed heart function requiring a more complicated stay in the intensive care unit. Why some children experience this remains unknown. This research will look at how the heart muscle of children with TOF functions to better understand abnormalities found in children with TOF.
The research can ultimately impact the care of these children in the intensive care unit and improve strategies aimed at minimizing myocardial damage associated with surgery. This can potentially have an impact on the need for future interventions and subsequent long-term outcomes.
Meet Gael: Gael was born in 2011 with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). At 6 months old, Gael had open heart surgery. Today, Gael does not allow his condition to define him or limit what he can do. CHF is dedicated to help fund CHD research that is designed to find better and more effective ways to help children like Gael, and give them an opportunity to grow up and live a full and happy life. Dr. Caldarone’s research is a step in the right direction to help children like Gael in the future.
Uniform Advantage donated $ 1 from the sale of each of its Healthy Heart Black prints and contributed over $ 2,000.00. Giselle Butler, SEO Analyst/Project Manager said “We were happy to get on board and support. With the exception of Breast Cancer, all of the other charitable organizations we donated to this Fall, involved helping children because they are our future and kids affected by this condition really need a lot of support and funding.”
About The Childrens Heart Foundation
Established by Betsy Peterson in 1996, The Childrens Heart Foundation (CHF) is the countrys leading national organization solely committed to congenital heart research funding. Since 1996, CHF has funded 58 research projects with more than $ 6.3 million. CHF is a national 501(c)(3) taxexempt charitable organization that does not receive any government funding. The goal of the foundation is to bring health, hope and happiness to children and families impacted by congenital heart defects, the most common birth defect in the United States. This objective is accomplished by funding the most promising research to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital heart defects.
