Discussion with Lukas Marxt, moderated by Adam Hyman, Director of Los Angeles Filmforum, with a reception following the presentation.
In his video works Lukas Marxt deals with different temporalities, peripheries and with artistic-contemplative observation. During his journeys Marxt looks for traces in the landscapes or inscribes traces into the landscapes himself. His discoveries are transferred into a cinematic language. Marxt is currently in Southern California as part of 6-month residency, supported by Stiftung Kunstfonds, Kunststiftung NRW, and the Ministerium f*r Familie, Kinder, Jugend, Kultur und Sport des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, where he is researching the ecological and socio-political structures surrounding the Salton Sea.

WUNDERSCH*N UND RUHIG GELEGEN (In a Beautiful and Quiet Location)

In a beautiful and quiet location is a playful commentary on artistic production of the landscape and the conventions of our perception: landscape as reenactment. (Andrea Pollach, Translation: Lisa Rosenblatt)
CIRCULAR INSCRIPTION (2016, 7 min.)
A mountain range on the horizon separates the cloudy sky from the dusty desert soil of the El Mirage Dry Lake, with the sounds of a distant roar. In the long shot, the gaze shows a detail of the Californian Mojave landscape, whose static panorama forms the referential and also material background for Circular Inscription…Circular Inscription positions itself, not only formally, as homage to the Land Art of the 1960s and 1970s, and produces in the process an ambivalent reproduction of tire tracks, which on the screen, ultimately take on the monumentality of the oversized Earth Works. Remaining behind in the landscape is the image of a temporary sign, a spiral, like Robert Smithson*s Spiral Jetty, or a circle, like the ones Michael Heizer carved in the El Mirage Dry Lake nearly a half-century before as Circular Surface. HIGH TIDE (2013, 7 min.)
Alejandro Bachmann wrote about the work “High Tide“: “The unfathomable, gloomy elegance of this splashing and rumbling landscape painting — the movement of the waves, the circling of the birds, the lifting of the cloud cover — is followed by an arc shot resembling a brushstroke that tells us about everything we have already forgotten while gazing at the static and precisely framed mountain: the world beyond the image.”
REIGN OF SILENCE (2013, 7 min.)
CAPTIVE HORIZON (2014, 15 min.)
Captive Horizon operates on a delicate line between reality and illusion. Lukas Marxt*s favourite motifs – barren landscapes, seemingly untouched by humans, but at the same time suggestively apocalyptic, and subtle changes in perception that play tricks on the observer – construct a peculiar narrative filled with mysterious angles and twists. Lukas Marxt (*1983, Austria), lives and works in Cologne, Germany and Graz, Austria. Marxt began his studies in Geography and Environmental Science. In 2004, he switched to audio visual studies at the Art University in Linz. From 2007 to 2008 Marxt attended the Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa at the Institut Arte Multim*dia. In 2009 Marxt continued with post graduate studies at the Art University in Cologne and later completing his Meistersch*ler post graduate studies at the HGB Leipzig.
Marxt is the recipient of several fellowships and artist grants, including START*Stipendium for Video* und Meida Art from the BKA, Vienna; Forum Stipendium, Linz; Diagonale *Preis Innovatives Kino for his work HIGH TIDE; LENTOS Kunstpreis, Linz; Medienkunstpreis Marl, Germany. Marxt’s work has been exhibited in numerous group and individual shows worldwide.
