TapBase Introduces NFC-Less Proximity Payments

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) May 09, 2013

TapBase has announced the addition of proximity transactions to their Tap platform for mobile payments, loyalty and rewards. Were very pleased to offer merchants and consumers the ability to perform proximity or contactless transactions with their iPads and iPhones, reported CEO, Robert Mallett.

Many retailers are now electing to use iPads as their preferred point-of-sale device. We can now offer such merchants the ability to exchange data with iPhone users directly. This allows payment to be made, receipts to be provided, coupons and points to be earned (or redeemed) and much more.

Near Field Communications (NFC) has enabled some Android smartphones to be used as virtual payment cards at the retail point-of-sale. For example, Google Wallet offers this functionality for certain devices and networks. However, Apples iPhone and iPad currently lack NFC hardware and require add-ons such as a dongle or custom case to perform a contactless transaction. We now offer an alternative that requires no additional hardware or cost.

TapBase uses the standard Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) radios available in Apples latest mobile devices in a novel way to replicate the functionality of NFC. For security, transactions are performed only when the devices are within inches of each other, and only when the transaction has been actively authorized by the smartphone user. Smartphone battery life is not affected as the BLE radios are only active for the short duration of the transaction.

TapBase plans to offer Android versions of its TapPay and TapWallet apps and launch further components of its platform in Q3, 2013. This will include the ability for merchants to issue their own virtual pre-paid and gift cards using QR codes, NFC and BLE technology.

TapBase LLC was founded by a team of experienced professionals with backgrounds in banking, smart cards, wireless and information technology. The company is an angel-funded startup based in the San Francisco bay area.
