p.s. add the crushed lemongrass stalks while you are making the broth :)

No I don’t use chicken stock. It is better to make your own I feel. If you have the prawn shells it is easy and it gives the broth a beautiful clear/red colour before you even add the prawn meat to cook. Just put all the shells in a pot, cover with water and simmer for 10 minutes. Then sieve to remove the solids. Tastes great :)

That sounds terrific! It would really enhance the seafood flavor. Do you any chicken stock at all?

  6. CookingThaiFood says:

Yes, substituting ingredients is fine and you may invent something new and delicious. Let us know. You can definitely add more chilies. Two chilies should be the minimum starting point unless you are serving to small children.

It looks like a soup, but the English translation isn’t an exact match. In general, Thai “soups” are prepared, served and eaten differently than western soups.

  8. CookingThaiFood says:

Not sure of the exact origin, but it is the most well known Thai dish and you can find it in almost every Thai restaurant in the world. The recipes vary like with all Thai dishes. I don’t think there is an official standard.

Any brand of Thai coconut milk will do, canned or boxed. Stay tuned and we will show you how to make your own fresh coconut milk.We personally like the sweeter chili paste(nahm prik pao) which says “Medium Spicy”, not the kind says “Tom Yam”. Pantai brand seems to be the most popular.

  11. CookingThaiFood says:

Yes, it is fun to scoop out the remaining coconut meat after you have finished the soup – so delicious. Plus, you don’t need to wash this bowl, just add it to the compost!

  19. AnnaValenciaLyra says:

if it is really a soup you must look at the ratio of the soup : toppings = 5 : 4 minimum and not the whole toppings in the coconut shell.
