The White Pines Resort (http://www.thewhitepines.com), a family friendly Eastern Ontario resort located in the scenic Madawaska Highlands of the Ottawa Valley, is preparing for their best winter season ever. According to Valerie Popkie, who along with husband Shawn, own and operate the award-winning resort that features superior housekeeping cottage rentals, trailer sites and an onsite marina, business at the White Pines is up 13% year to date, and with existing reservations to the end of the year factored in, the resort will be up 14.5 % for the year.
We feel this coming winter will be the strongest winter season that we have ever had, states Valerie Popkie. Our winter reservations are way up. Generally most bookings during the winter months tend to be last minute, as people like to wait and see what the conditions are like for driving and whether there is sufficient snow for outdoor activities like skiing and snowmobiling, but this year we already have a significant number of reservations for Christmas week, New Years and for winter weekend getaways later in the season. Winter is quickly becoming our busiest time of year, and with the strong increase in revenues, we are planning improvements and upgrades to the White Pines, explains Popkie.
Planned improvement to the White Pines Resort include the expansion of the packed and groomed snowshoe and cross-country ski trails, a lighted skating rink and major additions to their spectacular exterior display of holiday lights and decorations, reported to be one of the nicest holiday light shows in the Ottawa Valley. The White Pines Winter Wonderland Ice Castle, a remarkable structure that is hand built out of blocks of ice from Black Donald Lake, will be back by popular demand. The ice castle, an amazing sight at night when it is illuminated, will be set up as a bar. It has become a favorite with resort guests who are encouraged to help in its construction.
Improvements to the resort already completed this year include major upgrades to the childrens playground, and the installation of a new flag pole, so that, in addition to the Canadian and American flags, the White Pines can fly the flag of a different European country each year a nod to the many international guests who vacation at the resort. In 2012, the resort flew the Russian flag, a gift from employees of the Russian Embassy. Another attraction added to the resort that was enjoyed by kids of all ages was a giant chess court set. The White Pines has also purchased a high pressure forestry firefighting pump to protect the resort in case of another dry summer season like 2012 that caused some nearby forest fires.
The Popkies believe that the increase in business at the White Pines Resort is due to several factors, including increased web marketing, an improved economy – illustrated by a rise in the number of American guests, and exceptional weather. This past summer was one of the hottest and driest on record, ideal for a cottage vacation by the lake. And, while Ottawa didnt see much snow in 2012, our elevation usually enjoys a good snow load throughout the winter. Since meteorologists are predicting an above average snowfall for the upcoming season, things really couldnt look brighter, exclaims Valerie Popkie.
