An Introduction To Building A Website With WordPress
Chris will kick off this workshop by providing you with some tips on how to choose a good domain name for your website, how to register your domain name and also how to find the right hosting provider. He will then provide you with an introduction to the most popular Open Source Content Management System (CMS), WordPress. Chris will show you how easy it is to use and to be able to build and maintain your own website.
Chris will then review the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org before providing a live demonstration on how you can install WordPress yourself. Next, he will walk you through the basic anatomy of a website and the WordPress dashboard, covering how to create pages, posts, menus and how to insert media such as images and video.
Chris will then provide a brief overview of Themes which you can use to change the look and feel of your website and also Plugins that enable you to create additional functionality to your website. At the end of the workshop, Chris will share some tips on how to look after your website in terms of general maintenance and security. There will also be time for questions.
This session is suitable for anyone with an interest in learning more about websites and WordPress and is tailored to beginners. We assume that attendees will have basic level computer skills.

Chris Burgess (@chrisburgess) has been working in IT with a passion for web technologies for almost 20 years. He enjoys working on his own online projects as well running his own business helping clients to get the most out of what the web has to offer. He is passionate about keeping up-to-date with the latest online technologies and best practices and runs training workshops to help keep him on his toes!
